Shtip Fortress, Medieval fortress on Isar Hill in Shtip, North Macedonia
Shtip Fortress is a medieval fortification on Isar Hill in Shtip, North Macedonia. The stone structure rises on a rocky hill and provides views of the town and the Bregalnica River valley.
The fortress developed as a defensive structure and was especially important during the reign of King Marko between 1371 and 1395. Ottoman forces captured it in 1382 and maintained control over the site afterward.
Three churches were built below the fortress as places of refuge: St. Vlasius, the Archangel Michael Church, and the St. John the Baptist Church. These buildings show how religious life was intertwined with the defensive structure.
The site is accessible from downtown Shtip by following marked paths up to the hilltop. Walking shoes are recommended as the route involves climbing uphill.
Remains of ancient Paeonian settlements have been found at this location, where tribal leaders were crowned near the former Astibo River. The river is now known as Bregalnica and still flows through the valley below the fortress.
