Strumica Fortress, Medieval fortress in Strumica, North Macedonia

Strumica Fortress is a medieval fortification in Strumica, North Macedonia, rising on a hill above the valley. The structure consists of stone walls and towers that span across the landscape, dating from various periods.

The fortress was destroyed in the 11th century by Byzantine troops under Emperor Basil II during a military campaign toward Thessaloniki. This campaign had major consequences for regional control.

The fortress displays building styles from multiple periods, reflecting the different rulers who controlled this strategic point. Visitors can still see these layers of the past within the remaining foundations and walls.

Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the path to the ruins involves steep climbs and rough ground. Good footwear is necessary for safe navigation on uneven surfaces.

Excavations at the site revealed burial grounds from the Hellenistic period around the 3rd century BC. Later Roman burials from the 3rd century AD were also found, showing the long occupation history of the location.
