Burma Railway, World War II railway line in Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Myanmar.
The 415-kilometer railway connects Thailand and Myanmar through dense jungles, mountains, and river valleys in Southeast Asian terrain.
Construction from 1942 to 1943 involved 250,000 Southeast Asian civilians and 12,000 Allied prisoners of war under Japanese military command.
Multiple war cemeteries and museums along the railway preserve the memory of 90,000 civilian workers and Allied soldiers who died during construction.
A 130-kilometer section remains operational for tourism purposes, with regular train services running between Kanchanaburi and Nam Tok stations.
The railway includes Bridge 277, which gained international recognition through literature and films about World War II experiences.
