Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Kanchanaburi, Thailand.
Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is a burial ground with over 6,900 graves where British, Australian, and Dutch soldiers are interred. The graves are arranged in straight rows, and each white stone carries the name and unit of the fallen soldier.
The cemetery was founded in 1956 and holds the remains of prisoners of war who died between 1942 and 1943 during construction of the Burma Railway. This railway line was one of the darkest chapters of the war in Southeast Asia.
The cemetery honors soldiers from several nations who died during World War II. The neatly arranged graves with white headstones form a place of mourning and remembrance for visitors from around the world.
The cemetery is located on Saeng Chuto Road and is freely accessible throughout the day with no admission fee. Visitors should wear respectful clothing and observe the quiet atmosphere of the site.
Two graves contain the ashes of around 300 individuals who were cremated following a cholera outbreak at the Niki Niki prisoner camp. These tragic remains show the additional suffering that went beyond the already harsh conditions during the construction project.
