Popa Mountain National Park, National park in Mandalay Region, Myanmar.
Popa Mountain National Park is a protected natural area in Mandalay Region centered on a dormant volcanic peak that rises above the surrounding plains. The park encompasses different forest types across its slopes and lowlands.
The monastery atop the mountain was built centuries ago as a religious site for Buddhist practice and devotion. The area gained protected status in 1989 when officials recognized the need to conserve its natural habitats and wildlife.
The mountain serves as a sacred center for Nat worship, an important spiritual practice in local belief, where visitors encounter shrines and offerings at the monastery perched on the summit.
Reaching the summit requires climbing 777 steps and removing your shoes before entering the monastery. Wild monkeys roam the path, so keep food out of sight and do not attempt to feed them.
The mountain is home to the Popa Langur, a rare monkey species found nowhere else in the world that was only identified as a distinct species in recent decades. This primate depends entirely on the forest ecosystem of the peak.
