Alagteeg Formation, Geological formation in eastern Mongolia.
Alagteeg Formation is a geological layer in eastern Mongolia composed of reddish-brown mudstone and horizontally laminated sandstone that spans roughly 16 meters thick. The rock layers display ripple patterns and root traces that reveal ancient river environments.
The formation developed during the Late Cretaceous period roughly 85 to 72 million years ago as river deposits. Scientists formally documented and named it in 2008.
Scientists from multiple countries conduct research at this formation to study dinosaur fossils, particularly the remains of juvenile Pinacosaurus grangeri specimens.
The site sits in a remote area and requires specialized transportation and permits to visit. Travelers should prepare for challenging conditions and check local requirements beforehand.
Complete skeletons of different dinosaur species and turtles were discovered here, preserved in ancient river deposits. These finds offer rare glimpses into the variety of life millions of years ago.
