Sliema Point Battery

Sliema Point Battery is an artillery fortification on a peninsula between Marsamxett Harbour and St Julian's Bay, designed with Gothic Revival architecture and a distinctive main gate. The structure occupies a seaside location along a major coastal promenade in the area.

British military engineers built this defensive fortification between 1872 and 1876 as part of Malta's coastal defense system. The position was later adapted when equipment was installed to monitor harbor traffic and shipping movements.

The former military installation became a social meeting place where the Sliema Aquatic Sports Club shaped local activities from the early 1900s onward. The site shows how a defensive stronghold transformed into a venue for leisure and community gathering.

The protected structure now operates as a restaurant and bar welcoming visitors along Tower Road, a main seaside promenade. The location is easily accessible during a waterfront walk and fits naturally into a coastal stroll.

The fortification originally mounted large rifled muzzle-loading guns that were later removed to make room for surveillance equipment. This shift reveals how military strategy and technology evolved as harbor operations changed.
