Sliema Point Battery, Artillery battery in Sliema, Malta
The Sliema Point Battery stands on a peninsula between Marsamxett Harbour and St Julian's Bay, featuring Gothic Revival architecture with a notable main gate.
British military engineers constructed this defensive fortification between 1872 and 1876 at a cost of £12,000 to enhance Malta's coastal protection system.
The battery transformed from a military installation to a social gathering place, with the Sliema Aquatic Sports Club establishing activities near the site from 1912.
Currently operating as Fortizza Bar & Restaurant, the Grade 1 protected structure welcomes visitors along Tower Road, a main seaside promenade in Sliema.
The battery originally contained four large rifled muzzle-loading guns, which were removed in 1905 to make way for a searchlight tower monitoring ships near Grand Harbour.
