Ferretti Battery, Artillery battery in Birżebbuġa, Malta
Ferretti Battery is a coastal defense fortification in Birżebbuġa with a half-circular gun platform, eight gun embrasures, and two blockhouses linked by a ridge. The structure overlooks Marsaxlokk Bay and was built entirely in stone.
The fortification was built between 1715 and 1716 by the Order of Saint John, funded by Knight Francesco Maria Ferretti's donation. This period marked Malta's ongoing effort to strengthen its defenses against threats.
This structure shows how Malta defended its coast and keeps original features like damaged coats of arms above the main entrance. You can sense how the fortification once worked when you walk through the rooms.
Inside, you will find a restaurant with dining areas in the former gun gallery and a terrace with views across the surrounding landscape. Wear sturdy shoes since the old stone structures can be uneven in places.
The old musketry loopholes were converted into windows in the dining area, allowing the military history of this place to live on in its modern use. This creative transformation shows how the original architecture was preserved while adapting the space for a restaurant.
