Fort Delimara, British colonial fort in Marsaxlokk, Malta.
Fort Delimara is a British fort in Marsaxlokk built entirely from limestone with underground gun emplacements and deep defensive ditches surrounding the entire perimeter. The installation spans a substantial area and displays the typical military construction methods of the 19th century.
The British military built this fort between 1876 and 1888 as part of a defensive system to protect Marsaxlokk Harbor from naval threats. The design followed modern military concepts of the late Victorian era.
Fort Delimara represents a significant example of Victorian military engineering, incorporating advanced artillery systems from the late nineteenth century.
The fort is not normally open to the public, but tours can be arranged through heritage organizations to explore the site. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and understand that some areas may be limited due to the underground structure.
Four of the original 38-ton rifled guns remain on site and are among the last of their kind worldwide that still have their original gun carriages. These weapons offer a rare glimpse into late 19th-century artillery technology.
