Rotunda of Xewkija, Roman Catholic church in Xewkija, Malta
The Rotunda of Xewkija is a Roman Catholic church topped by a monumental dome that rises prominently above the town. Inside, the space opens up with several levels, chapels, and rooms arranged in a clear layout that visitors can navigate easily.
Construction started in 1951 at the site of an earlier church, and the building was completed under architect Ġużè Damato's direction. The new structure replaced the original sanctuary and represents the architectural vision of that era for the town.
The church houses a sculpture collection with preserved artworks from the earlier building, including pieces created by artists from Gozo. These works reflect the artistic tradition of the region and honor the local craft heritage.
An elevator takes visitors up to the dome roof where views over the region unfold. Morning and late afternoon are the best times to visit when light is pleasant and the church is less crowded.
The dome is supported by eight massive concrete columns clad in stone, creating a structure with no internal support walls. This engineering solution makes it an uncommon example of large-scale construction technique in the region.
