It-Tempji tal-Ġgantija, Archaeological museum in Xagħra, Malta.
Muzeum Ġgantija is an archaeological site featuring two Neolithic temples built from massive limestone blocks that rise over five meters high, with individual stones weighing more than fifty tons. The temples demonstrate remarkable building techniques accomplished without metal tools.
The two temples date from 3600 to 3200 BC and rank among the oldest free-standing structures in the world. Their construction reveals the development of organized society and advanced craftsmanship during the Neolithic period.
The name comes from Maltese folklore, where people believed giants built these structures because of their enormous stones. This belief shows how deeply the massive construction impressed later inhabitants.
Access is through a visitor center that displays artifacts from Gozo's prehistoric sites and provides context about the archaeological importance. Morning or late afternoon visits work best to avoid crowds and allow time to explore comfortably.
The interior walls of the temples contain remnants of red ochre paint, showing that these ancient buildings were once painted and decorated. These colored remains offer a rare glimpse into the original appearance of these structures thousands of years old.
