Ta' Kenuna Tower, Telegraph tower in Nadur, Malta
Ta' Kenuna Tower is a three-story structure standing 130 meters above sea level on cliffs near Nadur, positioned to overlook Comino and Malta islands. The building sits on elevated terrain designed to provide wide views across the surrounding waters.
Built by British authorities in 1848, the tower operated as a semaphore station for visual communication until 1883. The arrival of electrical telegraph technology marked the end of this signal method at the site.
The name Kenuna refers to the site's past role as a signal post where fires were lit to alert sailors to approaching threats. This warning system shaped how people used and thought about this clifftop location.
The grounds offer walking paths, benches, and a pond with fish plus a wooden bridge for exploring surrounding gardens. Wear sturdy shoes and stay alert near cliff edges, especially when weather turns windy.
Following restoration work in 2005, the structure now serves as a telecommunications facility while continuing its role as a maritime navigation beacon. This dual purpose allows the tower to support modern communication needs while maintaining its original lighthouse function.
