Fort Chambray, Military fort in Għajnsielem, Malta
Fort Chambray is a fortified structure in Għajnsielem, Malta, perched on a clifftop between Mġarr port and Xatt l-Aħmar. Its limestone walls incorporate multiple bastions and a sophisticated defensive layout designed to control the surrounding waters.
Construction began in 1749 under the Order of Saint John, funded by Jacques-François de Chambray, and was completed a decade later. The fort formed part of a broader defensive strategy to strengthen protection around Gozo island.
The fort served multiple functions through centuries, transforming from a military installation to a mental hospital and leprosarium during the twentieth century.
The site operates as a gated residential development managed by Fort Chambray Ltd, which restricts entry to certain areas of the fortification. Visitors should check in advance which sections are open to the public.
Initial plans envisioned this fort as the nucleus of an entirely new capital city for Gozo island, though this ambitious scheme was abandoned after construction. The fortress stands as a reminder of a grand vision that never came to fruition.
