Garzes Tower, 17th century defensive tower in Mġarr, Malta
The tower featured multiple gun mounts on its roof and defensive embrasures along all four sides to protect against maritime threats.
Built in 1605 under the Order of Saint John, Garzes Tower was the first watchtower constructed by the Knights Hospitaller on the Maltese islands.
The structure contained a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin, which served as an informal parish church for the local community and stationed militia.
Materials from the tower's 1848 demolition were reused to construct the bridge connecting Mġarr to the Nadur road.
The tower's construction was funded by Grand Master Martin Garzez through provisions in his will, as he died before the project began.
