Isopu Tower, Defensive watchtower in Nadur, Malta
Isopu Tower is a square limestone structure standing on cliffs between San Blas and Daħlet Qorrot. The thick walls slope inward as they rise about 120 meters above sea level, giving the building its distinctive defensive shape.
The tower was built in 1667 under Grandmaster Nicolas Cotoner as a coastal defense work funded by the Università of Gozo. The stationed garrison was supplied with artillery from the Order of Saint John to defend against seaborne threats.
The entrance displays four coats of arms representing the institutions that backed its construction and governance. These carved symbols tell visitors about the power structures that shaped Gozo in the 1600s.
The tower is open to visitors on select mornings each month through organized guided tours. Wear sturdy shoes as the approach crosses rocky terrain and cliff edges before reaching the structure.
The tower fired upon French fleet vessels in 1798, representing the last military engagement by a Gozitan coastal defense position. This occurred during a pivotal moment when control over island waters was being contested.
