Mixta Cave, Cave formation in Nadur, Malta.
Mixta Cave is a limestone cavern on the eastern edge of Ramla Bay on Gozo, featuring a wide entrance positioned about 224 feet above sea level. The opening frames unobstructed views of the red sand beach and Mediterranean coastline stretching below.
Archaeological evidence shows that the cave sheltered early inhabitants of Gozo island during various periods of Mediterranean settlement and expansion. The site remained of importance to successive cultures that passed through or inhabited the region.
The site is known locally as L-għar ta' Mixta, preserving traditional Maltese naming conventions passed down through generations by island residents. This nomenclature connects people to the place and its deep roots in the community.
Visitors reach the cave by following Triq I-Ghassa tal-Mahrag road to its end, where parking is available for several vehicles. The exposed location means clear days offer the best viewing conditions for the surrounding landscape and sea.
The entrance creates a natural window effect at high elevation, offering an unobstructed view of the distinctive red sand beach of Ramla Bay below. This combination of vantage point and coastal perspective is rarely found in cave sites across the region.
