Farak Formation, Geological formation in central Niger.
The Farak Formation is a geological sequence in central Niger composed of multiple sedimentary layers stacked over time. These strata stretch across much of the Iullemmeden Basin, revealing the structure of an ancient seabed.
The formation took shape during the Early Cenomanian period roughly 99 to 94 million years ago in the Late Cretaceous. It records a time when this region was covered by a shallow sea.
Research teams from international geological institutions regularly study this formation to understand African dinosaur distribution patterns.
Access to the formation requires special transportation and permits because of its remote location. Visitors should prepare for difficult conditions and long travel times.
The deposits contain fossils of Bahariasaurus ingens and Rebbachisaurus tamesnensis, a meat-eating and a plant-eating dinosaur from the Cretaceous. These discoveries help scientists understand how dinosaurs were distributed across Africa.
