Badagry, Colonial port town in Lagos State, Nigeria

Badagry is a port town in Lagos State that lies along the northern bank of Porto Novo Creek, connecting Lagos with the Republic of Benin through navigable inland waterways. The town spreads across flat coastal terrain where waterways and local markets form the heart of daily activity.

The town grew as a trading center that attracted European merchants between the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period it served as a significant port linked to Atlantic trade routes.

The town reflects the presence of Awori, Egun, Yoruba, and Ogu communities whose traditions continue to shape local celebrations and daily practices. These ethnic groups have left their mark on the character of the place through generations of shared life and customs.

Visitors can explore local markets such as Beach Town Supermarket and Smark Mini Mall, where fresh produce and traditional goods are available. The easiest way to experience the town is to walk through the market areas and waterfront where activity concentrates.

A remarkably preserved building from 1845 in the Marina district showcases early European construction methods and was among the first multi-level structures in the country. This architecture reflects the town's importance as a European trading hub of that era.
