Emotan Statue

The statue depicts Emotan standing tall in traditional clothing, representing her role as a market trader during the 15th century Benin Kingdom.

In 1954, Oba Akenzua II unveiled this monument to commemorate Emotan, who protected Prince Ogun from assassination and helped him become Oba Ewuare.

The monument marks the location where Emotan established the first child care center in Benin City while managing her trading activities.

Visitors can reach the statue by following Ring Road to the Oba Market intersection, where the bronze figure stands in the central square.

The statue replaced a sacred Uruhe tree that Oba Ewuare planted at Emotan's trading spot after declaring her the guardian spirit of the market.
