Hoogcruts

Hoogcruts is a rural settlement that spans two municipalities and sits on the Margraten Plateau. The locality serves as a connection between neighboring villages and forms a small crossroads community in this South Limburg region.

A monastery was founded here in the 15th century, and its ruins remain as evidence of medieval religious life in South Limburg. This long history shows how important this location was to the region's spiritual and social development.

The name Hoogcruts comes from a prominent cross at the main intersection, which locals call Ge Kruuts in their Limburgish dialect. This cross still marks the heart of the settlement and reflects the religious importance this place has held for centuries.

The settlement can be accessed via the N598 provincial road, which provides direct links to nearby villages. Visitors will find a quiet, rural setting that invites leisurely walks through the surrounding countryside.

A wrought-iron memorial cross honors Alphons Detry, the first Dutch soldier to fall during the 1944 liberation. This monument at a central location in the settlement preserves the memory of a pivotal moment in the region's history.
