Vogelpark Avifauna

Vogelpark Avifauna is a bird park and sanctuary in the Dutch city of Alphen aan den Rijn with gardens, ponds, and aviaries. The grounds house around 220 different bird species along with other animals such as penguins, lemurs, and red pandas.

The park was founded in 1950 on the grounds of a historic garden estate and was the first specialized bird park in the world. Its creation grew from an idea to display and protect birds and other animals in a managed environment.

The park's name reflects its focus on birds and their protection, which shows in the daily feeding routines and observation opportunities throughout the grounds. Visitors experience here how different animal species relate to their natural habitats.

The park is open year-round with varying hours depending on the season, and the pathways throughout the site are clearly marked. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the grounds are hilly and some areas may be unpaved.

The grounds developed from a wealthy family's private garden and retained this character with blended areas between wilder nature and designed spaces. This mix makes it notable because visitors encounter both organized enclosures and more natural corners throughout their visit.
