Betuweroute, Freight railway line from Rotterdam to German border, Netherlands
The Betuweroute is a modern freight railway running from Rotterdam to the German border with double tracks throughout. The network uses 25-kV electrification and digital signaling systems to move cargo safely and reliably across the Netherlands.
The project began in the late 1980s as demand for container transport from Rotterdam port grew rapidly. Its completion in 2007 marked an important step in modernizing Dutch transportation infrastructure for European trade.
The line takes its name from the Betuwe region it crosses, linking several Dutch towns and communities. Visitors notice how the railway shapes the landscape and connects smaller settlements with major ports and international borders.
This railway is not open to passenger traffic, so visitors cannot travel along it by train. You can view the railway from bridges and specific observation points, especially near Rotterdam and communities to the south.
The route features a major tunnel beneath Rotterdam harbor that was specially built to carry trains underground. This tunnel replaced older bridge connections and allows modern trains to leave ports and factories without dealing with surface-level obstacles.
