Beurs van Berlage, Concert hall and entertainment center on Damrak, Netherlands.
Beurs van Berlage is a concert hall and event space in Amsterdam, recognizable by red brick facades, an iron and glass roof, and a clock tower facing Damrak. The three tall interior halls open beneath the large roof and are divided by rows of stone columns.
Architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage designed this building for the Amsterdam Stock Exchange and it was completed between 1898 and 1903. After the exchange moved in the late 1980s, orchestras and events took over the halls.
The building carries the name of its architect and shows how functional spaces can transform into places for the arts. Today visitors attend orchestral performances in rooms once filled with traders calling out commodity prices.
Visitors can experience the halls during concerts or guided tours, or climb the tower for views over the old city center. A café near the main entrance offers drinks and light meals before or after events.
On February 2, 2002, the Dutch crown prince held his civil wedding ceremony within these walls. The ceremony used the monumental halls for a national occasion witnessed by many guests.
