Rispenserpoldermolen is a drainage mill in Easterein with an octagonal structure designed to manage water in the surrounding polder area. An Archimedes screw inside the mill, angled at a specific pitch, moved water from the low-lying land to maintain proper levels.
Built in 1821 by millwright Arjen Gerbens Timmenga, the mill operated for over 140 years before ceasing work in the mid-20th century. It was fully restored and repositioned at its current location during the 1990s.
A handwritten poem by the original builder decorates the interior, offering a personal glimpse into the daily thoughts and experiences of a 19th-century miller. This text helps visitors understand how the builder viewed his craft and life.
The interior is accessible through narrow stairways that require good footing and balance. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for tight spaces and low ceiling areas as you move through the mill.
The windshaft combines wood and steel in a hybrid design made by a respected workshop in a nearby town, showing advanced engineering for its era. This blend of materials was uncommon and demonstrates the high craftsmanship applied to mill construction.
