Castle Oost

Castle Oost is a rectangular structure with two wings and a central courtyard surrounded by formally landscaped gardens in Baroque style. The complex features multiple rooms and spaces that are gradually being developed for events and accommodations while keeping the original layout intact.

The first fortifications were built in 1115 by Gosewijn I, Lord of Valkenburg, to defend the growing settlement. Over the centuries the fortress suffered damage from multiple sieges but was repeatedly rebuilt and reinforced with stronger construction.

The name refers to its eastern position in town and reflects how it shaped the local settlement pattern. The former stable buildings have been converted into a cozy tavern where visitors can experience local traditions and meet people from the area.

The complex sits on level ground and is easy to walk around, with formal gardens providing pleasant spaces to explore. It is wise to check current opening times before visiting since the site is undergoing renovation and public access may be limited.

Underground passages discovered during 1937 renovations extend beneath the ground and connect to nearby marl caves in the area. These hidden routes once provided escape paths for residents during danger and reveal fascinating links between the castle and the natural geology surrounding it.
