De Meer Stadion, football stadium in Amsterdam
De Meer Stadion is a former football ground in Amsterdam's Oost district, built to host professional matches and surrounded by training pitches. The main stand could hold tens of thousands of spectators, making it one of the largest venues in the Netherlands during its active years.
De Meer Stadion opened in 1934 and served as the home of Ajax Amsterdam until 1996, when the club moved to the newly built Amsterdam ArenA. After the move, the old ground was demolished and the land was later redeveloped for housing.
De Meer Stadion was the home of Ajax Amsterdam for decades, and for many fans it still feels like the true home of the club. Walking past it today, visitors often stop to take in a place that carries so much meaning for Dutch football.
Since the stadium no longer exists, there is no ground to visit, but the site in the Oost district is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. Those interested in its history can walk through the area where it once stood, now a residential neighborhood.
The site where De Meer once stood is now a housing estate, and only a small memorial marker signals what used to be there. One of the streets in the new development was named after the old ground, keeping its memory alive in the neighborhood.
