Museum Het Valkhof, Archaeological and art museum in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
Museum Het Valkhof is a museum in Nijmegen housing Roman artifacts, medieval artworks, and contemporary exhibitions across three floors of a modern glass and steel building. The displays combine archaeological finds with art pieces spanning from medieval times through the present day.
The museum opened in 1999 when the G.M. Kam archaeological collection and the Commanderie van St. Jan art collection merged into a single institution. This union brought together two of the city's most important collections in a newly constructed modern building.
The collection displays Roman military helmets and medieval religious artworks that reflect how people lived across different eras. Rotating exhibitions featuring Dutch and international artists allow visitors to encounter contemporary creative perspectives throughout the year.
The museum offers guided tours in multiple languages and features an on-site café with park views where visitors can rest between galleries. The entire building is fully wheelchair accessible, making it easy for all visitors to explore at their own pace.
The building sits on the exact spot where Romans established their earliest military settlement in the Netherlands during the 1st century. This means visitors literally walk on one of the country's oldest Roman sites while exploring the collections inside.
