Maastricht University, Public research university in Maastricht, Netherlands
Maastricht University is a public research university in the Dutch city of the same name, spread across several buildings in the city center and the Randwyck neighborhood. It divides into six faculties and several research institutes that together conduct teaching and scientific work across a wide academic range.
The institution was founded in 1976 as the youngest public university in the Netherlands, mainly to meet the regional need for medical professionals. In the decades that followed it gradually expanded its offer and grew into an internationally oriented research institution with six faculties.
Teaching takes place in English across many programs, so you hear dozens of languages and accents from every continent on campus and in lecture halls. This mix shapes daily life in Maastricht too, where students gather in cafés, libraries and parks to work together and share traditions from around the world.
The institution uses problem-based learning, where students sit together in small groups, discuss academic questions and solve real-life cases. This working method takes place in many rooms across the city, so be prepared to move between different locations.
The law faculty holds position 23 worldwide in international rankings, while the business school is placed at 49. These positions reflect the research performance and international reputation of the two departments, which rank among the strongest of the university.
