De Heidebloem, Smock windmill in Erica, Netherlands
De Heidebloem is a smock mill in Erica with an octagonal wooden frame built on a brick base and covered in reed thatch. The four sails powered two pairs of millstones used to grind different types of grain.
The original mill from 1877 was destroyed by fire in 1895, prompting reconstruction of the current structure in 1896. It gained monument status in 1979.
The mill demonstrates traditional grain processing methods that visitors can watch in action during operating hours. This hands-on practice shaped how the local community worked and lived for generations.
The mill is open on Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM, and groups can arrange visits at other times by appointment. Plan to arrive early to see the machinery in operation and watch the grinding process.
From 1894 to 1911, the mill rented its sails from a sailmaker in Meppel rather than keeping them permanently on site. This arrangement shows how mills shared resources and supported each other economically.
