De Hoop, Stellingmill in Dokkum, Netherlands.
De Hoop is a three-story wooden stellingmill located in Dongeradeel that rises several meters above ground level. The structure features sails and grinding equipment that were historically used to process grain for the local community.
It was constructed in 1849 by millwright Gerrit P de Boer on the site of an earlier mill that operated until 1840. This replacement followed the removal of its predecessor and continued the grain-milling work for the surrounding area.
The mill received official recognition as a Rijksmonument number 13186, marking its status among protected Dutch cultural heritage structures.
The mill stands in a rural setting best reached on foot, and planning ahead is important since it does not have regular visiting hours. Access to the property should be arranged in advance to ensure you can view the structure and its features.
The mill operates with two different sail systems that reflect different engineering approaches to wind power. This combination of sail types was not always common and shows how millers adapted technology to their specific needs.
