Montevideo, Residential tower in Wilhelmina Pier, Netherlands.
Montevideo is a residential tower on the Wilhelminapier in Rotterdam, rising to 152 meters across 43 floors. It combines apartments with offices and shops, making it one of the most visible buildings in the Kop van Zuid waterfront district.
The tower was completed in 2005 by the architecture firm Mecanoo, built on land that once held working port facilities along the Maas. Its name comes from historic warehouses that previously handled cargo at this quayside.
The tower takes its name from a historic warehouse and blends homes with workspaces in a vertical community overlooking the river. This mix reflects how people in Rotterdam combine living and working in the same place today.
The tower sits on the Wilhelminapier and is easy to spot from the riverbank, making it a useful landmark when exploring the area on foot. Many other modern buildings, restaurants, and waterfront walkways are close by, so the whole neighborhood can be covered in a single walk.
The top of the tower is crowned by a glowing letter M, about 26 feet (8 meters) tall, that rotates with the wind like a weathervane. This detail makes the building easy to identify from a distance, especially after dark.
