Schiermonnikoog National Park, Protected coastal nature area in Friesland, Netherlands
The national park spreads across 72 square kilometers of Schiermonnikoog island, featuring dunes, forests, polders, tidal flats, marshes, and beaches.
The area received national park status in 1989, following decades of state-led forestry programs and dike construction to prevent sand movement and sea intrusion.
The park management regulates visitor access during spring and summer periods to safeguard breeding bird colonies and preserve natural habitats.
Access to the park requires a ferry ride from mainland Netherlands, and vehicles are not permitted on the island except for resident services.
Nearly half of all Dutch plant species grow within the park boundaries, providing essential habitats for migratory birds and seal populations.
