Kunsthal, Exhibition space and art museum in Rotterdam Centrum, Netherlands
The Kunsthal is an exhibition building in Rotterdam's Museum Quarter, housing several halls used for temporary art shows and cultural presentations. The spaces are designed to be flexible, allowing them to adapt to very different types of exhibitions.
The building was designed in 1992 by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas and completed shortly after. Koolhaas also designed the adjacent Museumpark, linking the building to a broader urban project.
The Kunsthal shows changing exhibitions on contemporary art, photography, fashion, and design throughout the year, without owning a permanent collection. This means every visit offers something different from the last.
The Kunsthal sits right on the edge of Museumpark and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. It is worth checking which exhibition is on before you go, as the program changes regularly.
The building has no conventional staircases connecting its spaces: visitors move from one hall to the next through sloping ramps. Large glass surfaces mean that, as you walk through the exhibitions, you can always see the park and the city outside.
