Marquette Castle, Medieval castle in Heemskerk, Netherlands
Marquette Castle is a multi-period fortress in Heemskerk featuring a distinctive arched entrance with supporting pilasters and a round tower from the 15th century. The building contains vaulted basement chambers with original 13th-century brickwork beneath the classicist redesign completed in the 1700s.
The castle began as a water fortress in the 13th century with later additions including the round tower. A major transformation in the 1700s gave it the classicist style we see today, replacing much of the medieval character.
The interior shows 18th-century decorations with painted ceilings and Chinese wallpaper that fill the rooms. Walking through the spaces, visitors notice the detailed craftsmanship and the style of the period reflected in every detail.
The building functions as an events venue and is open for visits, allowing exploration of the basement chambers and upper rooms. Plan time to walk through the different levels and spaces at a relaxed pace.
Ground-penetrating radar uncovered the buried foundations of an earlier water fortress directly beneath the current castle. This discovery reveals that a fortress had protected this location centuries before the building we see today was constructed.
