Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park, Cross-border nature park in North Rhine-Westphalia and Limburg, Germany and Netherlands
The Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park is a cross-border protected area spanning Germany and the Netherlands, combining river landscapes, woodlands, heathlands, and peatbogs. The varied habitats create a diverse mosaic of different ecosystems within its boundaries.
The idea for this cross-border protected area emerged in the 1970s when Germany and the Netherlands decided to combine their nature conservation efforts along their shared border. The project came to fruition after decades of planning in 2002.
The visitor centers showcase how people have long lived alongside rivers and wetlands, using traditional knowledge about the land. They reveal the connection between local communities and the natural landscape that shaped their daily life.
Well-marked hiking and cycling trails crisscross the area, suitable for different fitness levels and making it easy to explore the park. Information centers at various locations help visitors plan their routes and learn about the natural environment.
The heathlands near Niederkrüchten contain one of the region's rare juniper heaths, a specialized landscape that has nearly vanished across much of Europe. This particular plant community requires ongoing management to survive in its current form.
