Venlo-Herongen Air Base, Military air base at German-Dutch border, Netherlands and Germany.
Venlo-Herongen is a military air base spanning Dutch and German territories with two runways of 1450 and 1200 meters in length. The site contains extensive infrastructure including hangars and support buildings typical of military airfields.
The Luftwaffe established this base in October 1940 as an operational airfield. Operations ceased in September 1944 following a major bombing raid by the Royal Air Force.
The three-story structures display Bauhaus principles with functional design elements created specifically for military use. Visitors can see the clean lines and straightforward aesthetic that define this architectural approach.
The base features an extensive road network of approximately 48 kilometers connecting different sections. Those exploring the grounds should plan for adequate time as distances between various sectors are considerable.
After the war, Dutch sections of the grounds were partially dismantled and cleared, while German areas remained in their post-war condition. This different treatment is still visible today across the various parts of the complex.
