Nummer Een, Hamlet in Sluis, Netherlands
Nummer Een is a small settlement in Sluis, Zeeland, located near the Westerschelde estuary between Breskens and Hoofdplaat. It is characterized by a sluice system that regulates water levels in local canals and protects the surrounding agricultural land.
The settlement emerged in 1777 during the reclamation of the Hooge Plaete sandbank, when the dike was divided into ten numbered sections. The place name comes directly from this numbering system, marking its position as the first segment in this organized water management project.
The area was settled by Flemish agricultural workers who brought their Catholic faith with them, establishing a church nearby that still shapes the community. This religious foundation remains visible in the local landscape and how residents connect to their heritage.
The hamlet is most easily reached by car from nearby Breskens via local roads through flat polder landscape. Visitors should expect flat terrain and wear good shoes for walking or cycling around the area.
West of the settlement lies a deciduous forest of about 15 hectares planted by Staatsbosbeheer, featuring grasslands and ponds open to visitors. This protected woodland area with walking paths and water features offers a quiet retreat in the otherwise agricultural plain.
