Netherlands American Cemetery, Memorial cemetery and war memorial in Margraten, Netherlands.
The Netherlands American Cemetery is a military burial ground in Margraten, southern Netherlands, holding over eight thousand graves from the Second World War. The site includes a tower with chapel, a reflecting pool, and white crosses arranged in curved lines across gentle hills.
American forces opened the burial ground in November 1944 as their advance moved through the region. After the war ended, fallen soldiers from other sites were moved here, making it the largest American military cemetery in the Netherlands.
The site connects Dutch families with the graves of fallen soldiers they have cared for across decades. Many relatives from the United States travel here to attend May ceremonies and see where their family members rest.
The cemetery sits about six miles east of Maastricht and opens daily from morning until late afternoon. A visitor center offers maps and information about the military operations that touched this area.
Some graves display personal items such as photographs or small mementos left by Dutch adoptive families. Certain families have tended the same grave across three generations, gathering stories about the soldier over time.
