GEB building, Office and student building in Delfshaven, Netherlands.
The GEB building is an office and student housing structure in Rotterdam's Delfshaven district that rises 15 stories with a distinctive yellow brick facade. The exterior displays regular patterns of pilasters, wall panels, and continuous window strips that repeat uniformly across all levels.
Built between 1927 and 1931 for the Municipal Electricity Company, the structure held the distinction of being Rotterdam's tallest building until 1968. During World War II, it served as a German observation post from where the city could be monitored.
The structure exemplifies the New Business architectural style through its concrete skeleton, tower design, and four lower volumes with flat roofs.
The building contains student accommodation with shared facilities in standard rooms and private amenities in studio units. The location in Delfshaven provides straightforward access to neighborhood services and public transportation.
Engineers devised specialized concrete piles for the foundation that later became standard practice throughout the Netherlands. This technical innovation allowed for more stable construction on the city's wet soil conditions.
