Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica, Research library for hermetic philosophy at Keizersgracht, Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica is a research library on the Keizersgracht canal in Amsterdam, dedicated to hermetic philosophy. The collection spans rare manuscripts, early printed books, and later titles covering several centuries of related thought.
The library was founded in 1984 by Joost Ritman, who built it around his personal collection of rare books on mysticism and ancient philosophy. Over the years, the collection grew steadily and attracted researchers from many countries.
The library focuses on Christian-Hermetic writings, with texts on alchemy, gnosis, Rosicrucianism, Sufism, and Kabbalah gathered in one place. Visitors who enter the reading room encounter a body of thought that is rarely accessible in a single collection.
Access to the collection requires advance booking, as the materials are consulted in a supervised reading room. Planning the visit at least two weeks ahead helps to avoid unnecessary delays.
In 2022, the collection was inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World register, a distinction that very few privately founded libraries have ever received. This placed it alongside national archives and state institutions in terms of global recognition.
