Slot Moermond, Medieval castle in Renesse, Netherlands.
Slot Moermond is a square brick castle in Renesse, on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in the Netherlands, set within an estate surrounded by a water-filled moat. The grounds around the castle include stretches of forest and reed fields that shelter deer and birds.
A fortification stood on this site as early as 1229, and the current brick building was erected in 1513 by Jacob van Serooskerke as the third structure on this ground. The North Sea flood of 1953 caused heavy damage to the castle, which led to a full renovation and conversion.
The estate is used today as a restaurant and event venue, and visitors can walk through the grounds to get a sense of how a historic castle estate looks in daily use. The mix of reed fields, forest paths, and the moated building gives the place a character that is easy to read just by walking around.
The grounds are open to walkers and are best explored on foot, as the paths wind through forest and reed areas. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the terrain can be muddy, especially after rain.
Although the castle now operates as a restaurant and event space, it is listed as a Rijksmonument, meaning its exterior is under strict protection. This makes it one of the few places in the Netherlands where you can have a meal inside a nationally protected medieval building.
