Biljoen Castle

Biljoen Castle is a water castle near Rheden featuring four corner towers in traditional Dutch defensive style. The structure sits on medieval foundations and displays the characteristic fortification design of the period.

The site began as Broekerhof farm in the 11th century and was transformed into a fortified residence by the Duke of Geldern in the 16th century. This conversion from rural estate to defended castle reflects the changing security needs of nobility during that era.

The castle represents Dutch noble heritage through its preserved architectural elements and demonstrates the evolution of defensive structures into residential estates.

Visitors should expect limited opening dates and plan visits in advance. Tickets are distributed at the coach house, so checking current availability before arrival is advisable.

During the French invasion of 1672, King Louis XIV used the castle as his headquarters, which saved it from destruction. This royal presence protected the property from the fate that befell many other estates in the region.
