Compagnietheater, Theatre building at Kloveniersburgwal, Netherlands.
The Compagnietheater is a performance and cultural venue located at Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam's historic center, featuring an architecturally detailed facade with sculptural details. Inside, the space contains multiple halls of different sizes, including a main hall and smaller halls, along with a foyer and café, designed to accommodate various types of events and performances.
The building was designed in 1792 by Amsterdam's city architect Abraham van der Hart to replace a former mental health facility that had occupied the site. In 1995, architect Francine Houben renovated it extensively and reopened it as a theater, converting it into a space for artistic performances.
Originally built as a Lutheran church, the building now serves as a venue for performances and events, transforming its sacred purpose into a space for artistic expression. Visitors can sense this shift in how the interior has been adapted while maintaining elements of its religious past.
The venue is easily accessible along Kloveniersburgwal in the city center and has multiple entrances to accommodate different mobility needs. The various halls allow for flexible event configurations, and the on-site café provides a comfortable space to visit before or after attending a performance.
The building underwent advanced 3D scanning to create detailed digital models of its structure and architectural features. This modern documentation method allows the historic structure to be precisely preserved for future conservation and research purposes.
