Akwadukt Mid-Fryslan

The Akwadukt Mid-Fryslan is an engineering structure over the Prinses Margrietkanaal that carries a divided roadway while allowing ships to pass beneath. The construction bridges two provinces and enables parallel transportation systems on two different levels.

The structure was built in 1993 and replaced an older bridge that once crossed the canal at this location. It was designed to handle increasing traffic between regions while protecting boat passage.

The structure demonstrates Dutch engineering skill in managing water systems, showing how canals and traffic routes can coexist without disrupting boat traffic.

The aqueduct can be explored on foot or by car since it runs along a main highway. The best views come from the side roads or from the water if traveling by boat underneath.

The structure reused the foundations of an earlier bridge as the base for the new construction, saving resources while honoring engineering continuity. This practical approach shows how older and newer infrastructure can work together.
