Kasteel Neerijnen

Kasteel Neerijnen is a castle overlooking the Waal River with restored gardens, glasshouses, and rose beds surrounding the main structure. The building now serves as a town hall while the historical garden areas remain an active part of the property.

The castle was built around 1350 by Gijsbrecht de Cock and originally known as Klingelenburg, remaining under family ownership until 1594. Its position on the Waal River made it strategically important for controlling regional trade routes.

The gardens serve as a community gathering space, especially during the September pumpkin market where local growers display seasonal harvests and homemade preserves.

The castle sits at Van Pallandtweg 11 and is easily accessible on foot, with the public gardens open during daylight hours. Visitors can explore the grounds freely, though the gardens are most accessible from spring through autumn when paths are well-maintained.

The gardens have been restored and maintained since 1996 entirely through volunteer efforts, preserving historical plant varieties and traditional growing methods. This community commitment shows how local dedication can keep a historical property thriving across decades.
