Marienkamp Abbey, Medieval church building in Assen, Netherlands.
Marienkamp Abbey is a church building in Assen that preserves a stone south wall from medieval times. The remainder of the structure was fully rebuilt in 1662 and received its present-day appearance.
The convent was founded in 1215 and moved several times before settling permanently in Assen in 1258. This establishment became the seed from which the town itself grew over the centuries.
The building shows a blend of medieval design and Protestant changes that came after the Reformation. You can see these shifts in the different building styles layered throughout the structure.
The building sits in the town center near Brink and now operates as part of a museum space. You can easily reach it on foot and it regularly hosts cultural events and exhibitions.
The original monastery was a convent for women following the strict Cistercian rules. This religious community shaped the region for centuries through its way of life.
