The Needle, Historic obelisk in Rijswijk Woods, Netherlands.
The Needle is a stone obelisk standing in Rijswijk Woods, on the grounds where the Huis ter Nieuwburg palace once stood, in the Netherlands. It was built in the early 1790s using stones taken from the demolished palace that had occupied the same site.
The obelisk was built to mark the Treaty of Rijswijk of 1697, through which several European powers ended a period of conflict. The treaty negotiations had taken place in the Huis ter Nieuwburg palace, which was later demolished, and the obelisk was raised on that same spot about a century afterward.
The name "The Needle" comes from the slender, pointed shape of the obelisk, which rises above the surrounding trees and draws the eye of passing walkers. It stands in a clearing that invites people to pause along the woodland paths of Rijswijk Woods.
The obelisk is easy to reach on foot through Rijswijk Woods, where the paths are generally well maintained. After rain, however, the forest floor can become muddy, so dry weather makes for a more comfortable visit.
The obelisk stands on the very ground where the 1697 peace negotiations took place, not just near or around that location. The inscription carved into the stone names the treaty directly, making it easy for visitors to read exactly what event the monument refers to.
