Huys Dever

Huys Dever is a fortified residence in Lisse with a residential tower featuring horseshoe-shaped walls built from solid brick. The structure is encircled by a protective moat and displays the typical design of a medieval noble stronghold.

Noble Reinier Dever commissioned this fortified residence in 1375, establishing its original defensive structure. Significant expansions and modifications occurred after 1630, transforming it into a larger estate.

The castle museum displays archaeological artifacts discovered in the former moat, presenting evidence of medieval daily life in the Netherlands.

The site can be visited on several days per week, typically with afternoon opening hours, though it is wise to check current times in advance. The building is accessible from the grounds and features multiple historical rooms that can be explored on foot.

The foundation extends more than 3 meters below ground level, anchored on stable sand, which has protected the structure from subsidence over six centuries. This deep foundation proved crucial in keeping the building stable despite the flat, boggy surroundings of the Dutch landscape.
