Jacobikerk, Gothic church in Utrecht, Netherlands
The Jacobikerk is a Gothic church in Utrecht featuring a 63-meter tower clad in natural stone. The building comprises three aisles built primarily with red brick, creating a characteristic medieval structure.
Construction of the Jacobikerk began in 1290 and underwent major changes during the 15th century. The choir and southern aisle were completed by 1487, bringing the building to its present form.
The church serves as a major starting point for Dutch pilgrims embarking on the Way of St. James toward Santiago de Compostela. Visitors often gather here to begin their spiritual journey and connect with this ancient pilgrimage route.
The Jacobikerk is located at Jacobskerkhof 22 and easily accessible in central Utrecht. The church maintains regular opening hours and visitors can experience Protestant services and cultural events throughout the year.
Above the entrance portal stands a red-brown sandstone sundial, the oldest dated sundial in the Netherlands. This rare astronomical instrument reflects the long tradition of craftsmanship and technical skill applied during the church's construction.
