Missiehuis St. Michaël, Religious monastery in Steyl, Netherlands.
Missiehuis St. Michaël is a monastery complex with an unusual double church structure in Steyl along the Meuse River. The site consists of a lower church and an upper church, with the upper one built in neo-Gothic style.
The complex was founded in 1875 by Arnold Janssen to serve as a center for his missionary congregation. Janssen chose this location to escape religious restrictions that were taking place in his home country.
The monastery is named after the Archangel Michael and was designed as a place for prayer and missionary work. The gardens and spaces still reflect the spiritual purpose that its founders established here.
The lower church is open daily for visitors, while the upper church can only be seen through guided tours arranged with local staff. It is best to check ahead about tour availability and timing.
The lower church houses the tomb of Arnold Janssen, the founder, making this site an important pilgrimage destination for members of his missionary society. This connection highlights how deeply the location is tied to its founding story.
